Georgetown Coast Guard getting new response boat

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard station in Georgetown is getting a new emergency response boat.

The new 45-foot boat is arriving in a ceremony on Thursday and it replaces a 41-foot utility boat that dates to the 1970s.

The new boat has an advanced electrical system as well as integrated electronics that allow for greater control from the pilot house.

The delivery is the second of 5 boats coming to Coast Guard Sector Charleston during the next year. The boats are being assigned to four small boat stations in South Carolina and Georgia.

Georgetown man accused of soliciting teen boys now facing drug charges

GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC)- A Georgetown bar and restaurant owner recently charged with multiple counts of solicitation for prostitution will also be hit with two drug charges, according to Georgetown police.

Georgetown Police Captain Nelson Brown said investigators arrested 46-year-old Kenneth Carl Terry, owner and operator of the Krazy Fish, located at 619 Front Street.

Terry, who was charged with four counts of solicitation for prostitution, has also been charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges stem from a police investigation into allegations of prostitution and the sale of alcohol to minors, and the proposition of young, teenaged boys at the restaurant, authorities say.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC/AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for robbing more than a dozen banks in multiple states.

Court records show 43-year-old Wesley Todd McCracken of Myrtle Beach was sentenced in federal court in Charleston last week.

McCracken pleaded guilty in December and had faced up to 20 years. Prosecutors say he robbed the first bank in October 2011 when he held up a bank in Florence.

During the robberies, McCracken wore little in the way of a disguise
except for a navy Nike baseball-style cap. He used a similar method in
virtually all of the robberies. After entering the bank he would hand
the teller a note demanding cash in certain amounts or denominations
while warning against giving him bait money or dye packs. Although
McCracken never displayed any weapon, his notes usually stated that he
had a gun.

Sunshine and warm temps to make a brief appearance Tuesday

Sunshine and warm temps to make a brief appearance Tuesday

Live 5 Meteorologist Chad Watson says it will be a partly sunny afternoon, with showers returning later this evening:

Morning fog is starting to burn off but there could still be a few patchy spots inland until mid-day or so. Tuesday afternoon looks partly sunny and warm with highs in the mid to upper 70s. A few inland areas will hit the 80° mark, which is the normal high for the day. Rain and thunder may try and pop up along the sea-breeze toward the late afternoon and early evening. If storms can develop they should be few and far between but still could drop very heavy rain so plan the afternoon drive home after a look at the radar.

Rising seas clearly evident along Georgetown Co. coast

By BRUCE SMITH

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - Rising sea level may be hard to notice in cities where seawalls and docks line the shorefront. But it's easy to see down a winding coastal dirt road in Georgetown County.

Clemson University researchers have compared aerial photographs taken over six decades at Strawberry Swamp at Hobcaw Barony on Winyah Bay. And their study shows rising sea levels have resulted in about a 300% increase in salt marsh in the area - from about four acres to more than 16 acres.

As the freshwater forest wetlands have been converted into a salt marsh, dead trees in the water bear silent witness to how rising sea level is changing the landscape.

The study says sea level rise in the area has averaged 3 to 4 millimeters a year during the past century.

A cloudy and showery Monday is ahead so make sure you keep the rain jacket or umbrella handy all day. Temps are mild as we head into mid-morning with temps near 70° already. By lunch showers and storms could pop back up at any time and that 80% rain chance lingers all the way into the afternoon drive home. Highs today are expected to reach the mid to upper 70s on a muggy but mild southwest breeze.
