Vets perform surgery on dog found bound, beaten in Georgetown canal
News

GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC)- Veterinarians performed surgery Tuesday on the dog found bound and beaten in a Georgetown canal last week.

Dara the dog was found bound with duct tape and left for dead in the waters of the International Paper Canal on July 2. Dara was taken to the Saint Frances Animal Center, and because of the size of her belly, staff members believed she was pregnant.

However, they have since determined she was actually swollen from being beaten and kicked. During surgery on Tuesday, veterinarians removed Dara's spleen and also found several masses in her body.

They are expected to discover Wednesday whether or not those masses are cancerous.

350 people have already applied to adopt Dara, but she can't leave the shelter yet because she's considered evidence in the case.

Two other bound, dead dogs were found in the canal last Thursday.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office continues to look for a suspect. So far $2,500 have been raised for information leading to an arrest.
