Georgetown County officials hope to find funds for dredging in local port

Officials in Georgetown County hope new Federal Legislation will also make it easier to find funding for dredging in their local port.

Senator Jim Demint introduced four separate bills to create what he calls a "transparent way to prioritize Federal spending based on merit, without earmarks, for transportation, water and trade programs."

The Georgetown Times says only six ships have stopped in the Georgetown port this year due to the dredging needed in the channel.

Congressman helps open new health center in Georgetown

Congressman Jim Clyburn visited Georgetown County earlier today for the grand opening of the newly renovated St James-Santee Family Heath Center.

The health center will move from the mobile facility on Powell Road that housed it for 20 years to the newly renovated Old Sampit School building.

The renovation was made possible thanks to a $436, 375 grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
The new facility includes 10 exam rooms, a lab, larger waiting rooms, a patient education classroom and room for a future pharmacy.

Congressman Clyburn included a provision in the ARRA to provide $2 billion to build and update community health centers across the country.
