Hurricane evacuation test

The South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with other state and local agencies will conduct a hurricane evacuation exercise on Monday, June 14th.  The exercise is designed to test the lane reversal plans for the following roads:

  • I-26
  • US 21
  • US 278
  • US 501
  • SC 544

There will be officials along these roads, but no lanes will actually be reversed.  Drivers will be able to move freely along these roads, but will need to be aware of the extra officers and lane reversal equipment that will be along some of the routes for safety's sake.

Highway 17 rehab plans

Georgetown city officials are meeting with state Department of Transportation officials to discuss the scheduling and scope of work to be performed on Highway 17.  A main issue is the timing of the project.  The thoroughfare is a major hurricane evacuation route for the region.  Officials are trying to decide if the start of the much needed work should be pushed past the end of hurricane season.

Southwest strikes deal with Charleston, Greenville

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Low-cost airline Southwest is moving into Charleston and Greenville within the next year.

In an announcement Tuesday afternoon at the Charleston airport, officials said they expected the new Southwest flights to be scheduled in 2011. The Dallas-based company said it would spend the next few months researching which cities should be part of its initial offering.

"This is a wonderful day for the citizens of the Charleston area," said Teddie Pryor, Sr., chairman of Charleston County Council. "Having a low-cost carrier is a quality of life issue, and it will benefit our residents every bit as much as it does the business community."
