SC CARES Fall Festival

SC CARES is set to host their annual "Fall Festival" at the South Carolina Coastal Animal Rescue and Education Sanctuary on Sunday, Oct. 23.

From noon to 5 pm, come by and visit with the animals that have been rescued by SC CARES, a no-breed/no-kill animal rescue and sanctuary.

There will be a tortoise race, acorn collecting contest, Young Artist Poster contest, and a Trick or Treat Costume contest.

Enjoy snacks including Skips homemade ice cream from Sweeties.

Wendell Matthew will be performing music and a visit by Jerry Walls and his amazing creatures.

This event is free for everyone.

Guided discovery walk

GEORGETOWN (WCSC) - Join Hobcaw Barony Reserve staff for a guided Discovery Walk today at 3 p.m.

Learn about shells, sand dunes, geology, tides, and beach inhabitants of a barrier island.

Participants will sift the wet sand to find creatures that live underfoot and pull a seine net to see what lives in the surf. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost $10/person; weather permitting; limited to 20; call 546-4623 to register.

Tour the North Inlet this Thursday

GEORGETOWN (WCSC) - If you’ve got some free time this Thursday, the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center will host a tour on the fish of the North Inlet.

Participants will learn about fish, crab, and shrimp species common to area creeks and assist with a long-term biological monitoring project. 

Old clothes and sneakers or boots are recommended.  Be prepared for walking through marsh mud, biting insects, and outdoor conditions.  Bring a bag lunch and water, if desired, and meet at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center parking lot.  The tour starts at noon.

Participants will be transported by van to the creek and seawater laboratory facilities.

There is no charge but the tour is limited to 10 people.  Call  546-4623 to register.
